Description: Featuring majestic 180 degree Hudson River views, the Alton B. Parker House is architecturally significant as a distinctive example of a Hudson Valley mid-19th century country house. The Italianate picturesque villa with direct Hudson River access from the Esopus Landing is a stuccoed mansion completed ca. 1860 incorporating an earlier stone dwelling. It is sited on a terrace 50 feet above the Hudson with sweeping views from the expansive 1600 SF porch and the interior of the mansion. Completed in 2016, the 7, 900 sq ft 3-story residence has been renovated and restored with careful attention to its original details and historic character while also fulfilling modern day priorities such as a gourmet kitchen, high end bathrooms and efficient temperature control. Gleaming oak and parquet floors throughout, as well as original woodwork and custom carpentry. There are four working fireplaces on the main level with another 4 ready for improvements on the second floor. The roof was replaced with lead coated copper, an extremely durable roofing material with a long lifespan suitable for historic buildings. The guest house, which is a 1400 SF two story wood frame dwelling, checks all boxes of today’s taste for a vintage farm house, featuring many original 1840 features with a contemporary kitchen and 2 updated baths, great for guests, family or staff. In addition, there are several contributing buildings built ca. 1900, such as the ice house, the stone incubator and smoke house. All are a wonderful part of this magnificent Hudson River compound ready for its next chapter in history. This is a rare offering, only 20 minutes from Metro North and 90 minutes from Manhattan.
The Alton B. Parker House, also known as The Rosemount Estate, was added to the New York State Register of Historic Places and is nominated for the National Register for its association with Alton Brooks Parker (1852-1926) who resided there with his family from 1898 to 1926. The same year he purchased the estate, he was elected Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals and held office until he ran against the sitting President Theodore Roosevelt in the 1904 presidential election. He was nominated by the Democratic National Convention in St. Louis in his absence and delivered his acceptance speech on the lawn of his Esopus estate in presence of party officials, press and lauding supporters who mostly arrived by boat disembarking at the Parker landing. After losing the election, Parker returned to practicing law and tending to his beloved and expanding estate farm with orchards, greenhouse, gardens, and ice house.
