Property Type: Restaurant
Description: This stunning property sits on the land of what was once the Grand Hotel. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, millions of visitors came by train to escape the hot, polluted New York City summer. Tuberculosis was epidemic, and anyone who could sent their families up for the balsam fresh air and pure water of the Catskills. Of the many hotels, inns and boarding houses, none was grander than the Grand Hotel in Highmount. This magnificent structure lasted from 1881 to 1966 when it was finally dismantled. A quarter mile long, it had a rail-riding bar that crossed back and forth over the county line to avoid blue laws restricting hours of drinking. How ironic! The Catskills now provide pure drinking water to over nine million people through a mighty reservoir and aqueduct system… and it all started out with horse and wagon. It burned down and the current owners purchased it and turned it into a wonderful restaurant and lodge. It was a favorite of locals and the trending crowd, as well as skiers, Belleayre Ski Center is directly across the street. The wonderful space that housed the restaurant has a lodge like feel. A step back in time, everthing has been left as it once was. The spacious dining room offers stunning views of the mountains and ski trails. Excellent kitchen space, still with all appliances, dishes, glassware. The bar area is a step back in time with bar stools, glassware, ashtrays and even a phone booth! A private room offers yet a another bar, sitting area and the original stone fireplace of the Grand Hotel. Upstairs you will find two en suite bedrooms for guests. The front door off the main dining room will take you out to a deck with magical views of the Catskill Mountains, overlooking the Big Indian Valley towards Slide Mountain. The original stonework from the Grand Hotel is massive, and will take your breath away. Stone walls, walkways, the grand front stair entrance. A separate building was a lodge and offered eight aparments. This building is in need of updating and repair but seems to be stucturally sound. As they say, history repeats itself. This is a time when visitors are looking for peace and solace in the country, away from the overwhelm that life can be. One of the most beautiful locations and rich in history, this would be the spot to transform it into a getaway. Restaurant, lodge, health retreat center, corporate retreat, whatever venue you choose it will be coveted.
